ThingsBoard is the world's most popular open-source IoT platform. But how do you run it? ThingsBoard Cloud offers managed convenience – with device limits, data point caps, and per-device pricing from $0.30/device. Self-hosting gives maximum control but requires PostgreSQL, Kafka, and ongoing DevOps expertise. thingshost offers a third way: Managed ThingsBoard Hosting with flat-rate pricing and no per-device fees, no license-based device limit (CE, recommended for up to 100 devices), and GDPR-compliant hosting in Germany – from €149.90/month.

Option 1: ThingsBoard Cloud (Public)

What ThingsBoard Inc. Offers

ThingsBoard Cloud is the official SaaS platform from ThingsBoard Inc. (New York, USA). It hosts the Professional Edition as a managed service on AWS infrastructure with EU and US clusters.

Current Pricing (as of January 2026)

Plan Price/month Devices Assets Data points/month Support
Free $0 5 5 1M Community
Prototype $49 50 50 10M Community
Pilot $149 100 100 100M Help Desk + white-labeling

Additional costs:

  • Extra devices: $0.30/device/month (from Business)
  • Device Pack top-up: $15 for 50 devices
  • Traffic Pack: $5 for 2.5M transport messages
  • Storage Pack: $10 for 1B data point storage days

Managed Private Cloud (dedicated instance): from $1,499/month (5,000 devices, 500 GB storage, 99.9% SLA).

Where ThingsBoard Cloud Hits Its Limits

1. Per-device pricing gets expensive at scale. At 500 devices, you pay at least $399/month. At 2,000 devices: $749 + 1,000 × $0.30 = $1,049/month. At 5,000 devices: $1,949/month – and that's just device costs, without data point overages.

2. Data point limits create hidden costs. Every telemetry value a device sends counts against the monthly limit. A temperature sensor sending every 5 minutes: 8,640 data points/month per device. At 500 sensors: 4.3M data points/month – the Prototype plan (10M) then supports at most ~1,100 devices at this interval.

3. No dedicated instance under $1,499/month. All Public Cloud plans ($0–$749) run on shared infrastructure. A dedicated instance is only available from the Private Cloud plan – from $1,499/month.

4. US company with AWS infrastructure. ThingsBoard Inc. is headquartered in New York. The cloud runs on AWS. An EU cluster is available, but data processing is handled by a US company – potentially subject to the CLOUD Act. How real such provider dependency can become is shown by the hyperscalers themselves: in 2025/2026 AWS ended or froze several IoT services, documented in our 2026 AWS IoT retirement list.

Option 2: ThingsBoard Self-Hosted

What You Need

ThingsBoard CE runs as a Docker container. Infrastructure requirements:

  • PostgreSQL as the main database (or hybrid with TimescaleDB/Cassandra for time-series)
  • At least 4 GB RAM (PostgreSQL), 8 GB RAM (with Cassandra)
  • Kafka for production deployments (message queue)
  • Docker / Kubernetes for container orchestration

A simple Docker Compose setup runs within an hour. A production cluster with Kafka, Cassandra, and monitoring is a multi-week project.

What Self-Hosting Costs

Item Cost
ThingsBoard CE license €0 (Apache 2.0)
ThingsBoard PE license from $10/month (Maker, 10 devices)
Server (VPS/cloud) €50–200+/month
Managed PostgreSQL €20–100/month (or included in server)
Kafka (production) €50–150/month (managed)
Monitoring €20–50/month (or set up yourself)
Admin time 8–20 hours/month
Total (CE) ~€150–500+/month + admin time

When Self-Hosting Makes Sense

  • You have a DevOps team that professionally operates PostgreSQL, Kafka, and Docker
  • You need full control over every configuration parameter
  • You run a cluster with Cassandra for millions of devices
  • You have specific compliance requirements mandating self-hosting on your own hardware

When Self-Hosting Becomes a Problem

  • PostgreSQL tuning: Without index optimization, vacuum management, and connection pooling, the database becomes a bottleneck – especially with growing time-series data.
  • Kafka operations: For production deployments, ThingsBoard recommends Kafka over in-memory queue. A Kafka cluster is its own infrastructure project.
  • Updates: ThingsBoard releases bring new features but also schema migrations. Without a testing environment, every update is a risk.
  • Monitoring: Who monitors the monitoring platform? When ThingsBoard goes down and no alerting exists, you find out when customers call.

If you would rather not keep that operational load in your own team, move it: managed ThingsBoard hosting from thingshost covers PostgreSQL tuning, updates, backups and monitoring, while dashboards, rule chains and data stay with you.

Option 3: thingshost – Managed ThingsBoard Hosting

What thingshost Offers

thingshost hosts ThingsBoard as a dedicated managed service – the same open-source software as self-hosting, but without the operations overhead:

  • Dedicated instance: Your own ThingsBoard instance with own PostgreSQL. No shared infrastructure.
  • Standard (CE): No license-based device limit, recommended for up to 100 devices. Dashboards and rule chains at no extra cost, no data point limits, flat rate.
  • Premium (PE): ThingsBoard Professional Edition with white-labeling, RBAC, platform integrations, and more. Priced by device count: from €249.90/month for 50 devices to €699.90/month for 1,000 devices, PE license included.
  • 8 regions worldwide: Germany, Netherlands, USA, Canada, Singapore, Japan, Sydney, India.
  • Data centers: ISO 27001 & BSI C5 in Germany, ISO 27001 & SOC 2 Type II in the other regions (certifications held by the respective DC operators).
  • 24/7 monitoring, automatic updates, backups – PostgreSQL tuning, patch management, and incident response included.

What thingshost Costs

Plan Monthly
Standard (CE) €149.90
Premium (PE) from €249.90 (50 devices)
Enterprise Contact sales

Standard (CE): no license-based device limit, recommended for up to 100 devices. Dashboards and rule chains at no extra cost, no per-device fees.

Premium (PE) is tiered by device count: €249.90 (50 devices), €299.90 (100 devices), €499.90 (500 devices), €699.90 (1,000 devices), PE license included in each tier. All plan details and tiers are listed in the pricing overview for managed ThingsBoard hosting.

Cost Comparison: 500 Devices, 3 Years

Item ThingsBoard Cloud (Startup) Self-Hosted (CE) thingshost Premium (PE)
License/plan $399/month ($14,364/3Y) €0 €499.90/month (500 devices, PE license incl.)
Server/hosting Incl. ~€5,400–18,000 Incl.
Admin time (3Y) €0 ~€14,400–36,000 €0
Data point overages Variable €0 €0
Dedicated instance +$1,499/month (Private Cloud) Yes (own server) Yes (included in the plan)
Total 3 years ~$14,364+ (shared) ~€19,800–54,000 ~€17,996 (€499.90 × 36)

ThingsBoard Cloud: $399 × 36 months, shared infrastructure. Self-hosting: admin time 8–20h/month × €50/hour. thingshost: monthly price × 36. Standard (CE) at €149.90/month is recommended for up to 100 devices; for 500 devices the Premium tiering applies.

The honest comparison is not a pure list-price comparison. ThingsBoard Cloud Startup has the lower monthly price, but it delivers shared infrastructure, data point limits, and per-device surcharges from the Business plan onwards. A dedicated instance costs from $1,499/month in the cloud, more than twice thingshost Premium for 500 devices, PE license included. On top of that comes predictability: a flat rate with no per-device fees within the plan recommendation, instead of a bill that grows with every new sensor.

GDPR and Data Sovereignty

Aspect ThingsBoard Cloud Self-Hosted thingshost
Provider HQ New York, USA – Ruhr region, Germany
Infrastructure AWS (EU cluster available) Freely choosable 8 regions, EU available
Certifications AWS SOC 2, ISO 27001 Own responsibility DE: ISO 27001 + BSI C5
CLOUD Act Potentially (US company) No (if EU) No (EU locations)
DPA ThingsBoard Inc. contract Create yourself Available in portal
Data path Via AWS (US provider) Own control German DCs, no US provider

For regulated industries – energy providers, utilities, healthcare, public sector – the question of data sovereignty for IoT platforms isn't a nice-to-have, it's a dealbreaker. If operations also fall under NIS2, the measures required by Section 30 BSIG come on top: which of those building blocks the platform delivers and which remain organizational is clarified in our article on the NIS2 requirements for OT and IIoT.

Decision Guide

ThingsBoard Cloud is right if you:

  • Need the Professional Edition (PE) with all enterprise features
  • Have fewer than 100 devices and the data point budget is sufficient
  • Don't process GDPR-critical data or US cloud is acceptable
  • Want to start quickly and price is secondary

Self-Hosting is right if you:

  • Have a DevOps team that professionally operates PostgreSQL, Kafka, and Docker
  • Run millions of devices across a Kubernetes cluster
  • Need full control over every parameter and component
  • Have specific compliance requirements mandating own hardware

thingshost is right if you:

  • Want to run ThingsBoard in production – without DevOps overhead
  • Have more than 100 devices and need flat-rate pricing instead of per-device
  • Prefer GDPR-compliant hosting in Germany (or another region)
  • Want dashboards and data points without limits, with no license-based device limit (CE)
  • Need a dedicated instance – without $1,499/month for Private Cloud
  • Want to outsource operations to a managed service provider

Also of interest: Running it yourself means carrying the dependency vulnerability stream too. What that means in practice is in the 2026 ThingsBoard CVE list.

Conclusion

ThingsBoard Cloud is a solid product – but per-device pricing, data point limits, and the price for dedicated instances ($1,499+/month) make it expensive for growing IoT projects. Self-hosting gives full control but costs significant DevOps time that most businesses could better invest in their actual IoT solution.

thingshost offers the third way: the same open-source platform as self-hosting, but without the operations overhead. Dedicated instances, flat-rate pricing without per-device fees, GDPR-compliant hosting in certified data centers – from €149.90/month. This managed path is also the destination when you migrate away from a deprecated US service, such as the move from AWS IoT Events to ThingsBoard.

Agree scope and provisioning with WZ-IT. Provisioning and contract terms are agreed with WZ-IT in the proposal. There is no self-service portal or automatic trial subscription.
